The position in Monmouthshire schools

There is no local food specification in the current catering contracts for Monmouthshire Primary Schools.

There is a freedom for contractors to source food wherever they can find it. But that does not preclude the use of local food.

The budget for school meals in Monmouthshire is nearly £1 million and meal costs are £1.20 for infants and £1.35 for juniors.

New tenders will be invited in the new year after a Best Value Review of the catering service. Currently, all fresh meat and frozen meat is sourced from a distributor in Crickhowell.

However, where that distributor gets its food from is not specified.

Fruit and veg are sourced from Redbridge in Hereford and dried foods come from the Midlands.
