Caldicot Ladies begin FA Cup quest

CALDICOT Town Ladies Football Club are flying the flag for Wales in the FA Cup this Sunday.

The South West League side take on the Swindon Spitfires in the first qualifying round for this year's competition. And manager Rachel Czajkowski is quietly confident of booking in a place in the second round.

An upbeat Czajkowski told the Free Press: "I have talked to a couple of other managers and the vibe is we could be in with a good chance of winning. I am hopeful with the squad I have of going through."

The side was only formed two years ago, initially competing in the Welsh League. Irregular fixtures led to them applying to join the English South West League.

"It's a much more competitive league with higher quality opposition and a better set-up. As a result of our application to join, we also got to enter the FA Cup, which is a great achievement and honour for the club.

"We are the first ever Caldicot Town side - and that includes men - to enter the competition and we intend to do the club proud," said Czajkowski.

The ladies' team certainly boasts plenty of genuine class players that could do the business this Sunday, including last season's top club goal scorer, Julie Cole.

"She's impressive in front of goal, getting 23 for us last season in the league. We've got a lot more depth this season, though. The pre-season has proven that. We've won two of our three games, with goals coming from all over the field," explained the Town boss.

Czajkowski will employ the side's favoured sweeper formation for Sunday, with attacking wing backs promising plenty of action in front of the net.

"I have plenty of midfielders, so the sweeper system suits us. We won't be relying on Julie as much as previous seasons, either. I have plenty of options," she said.

Sunday's match kicks off at 2pm with a place in the next round against Penzance or Newquay up for grabs.
