Gwent Central League round-up

MARDY'S Gwent Central First Division woes continued after losing 4-2 at home against Gilwern and District.

The defeat leaves Mardy rooted in the lower reaches of the bottom half of the table with just ten points from eleven games.

Both sides were level at the break, but Gilwern looked the stronger after the interval edging the game with goals from Graham Rees 2, Wayne Rowlands and Graham Jones.

Mardy's strikes came from the boot of James Copeland and Robert Howells. Guy Povey's sending off for two bookings marked a bad day at the office for Mardy. Gilwern now lie in an impressive fifth place.

Crickhowell consolidated their position in the top half of Division One after trouncing Clydach Wasps 6-1.

Three goals in each half eased them to victory with Graham Mason's brace the highlight of the match. Simon Tippins got Clydach's only piece of consolation, but it meant little to the Wasps who are now ninth in the table. Crickhowell lie in fourth.

Usk Town move into sixth after demolishing Goytre 6-2. Four second half goals did the damage with young Steve Wade getting a brace. Goytre's Chris Perry scored their two goals.

Llanarth made easy work of Pontypool Town winning 6-1. Toby Preece got a brace, while Steve Morgan, Peter Maddocks, Colin Morgan and Andrew Childs chipped in with goals a piece. The win puts Llanarth in third.

In Division Two Govilon put 12 goals past a sorry Abergavenny Thursdays side. Thursdays are now rooted to the bottom of the table conceding 92 goals in just 14 games played.

Govilon on the other hand are now in fourth with two games in hand. And if Tristan Southway and Steve Schofield can keep up their impressive scoring record (a hat trick each against Thursdays) then Govilon look like dark horses for promotion.

Gilwern and District pick up all three point at home to Sebastopol winning 4-1, Robby Warner getting a brace. The victory was Gilwern's ninth of the campaign and leaves them second in the Division Two table.

Usk's Mike Dixon lies fifth in the Division One top goal scorers table with 16 goals. Sebastopol's Robert Surtees heads the table with 20 strikes.
