Monmouth AFC hit by thieves

MONMOUTH AFC assistant manager Andrew Lewis has told the Free Press that the club can ill afford to pay for the damage caused by vandals to its football ground after a group of youths stole two of the pitches football and rugby posts.

The incident is believed to have happened on Friday night and follows a similar attack on the Monmouth Sports Ground just weeks earlier.

A beleaguered Lewis said he was very disappointed that the local football club had been targeted in that way.

"It's getting ridiculous and costing us a lot of money. We are looking at our insurance because the club can not really afford to pay the costs to replace the posts. we're not in a position to pay for vandalism," he said.

Despite the incident Monmouth's second team still played their scheduled game against Undy and managed to bring a small smile to the faces of the club's committee and fans with a well deserved 2-1 victory.

With the first team without a game Lewis played at right back in the game with striker Dave Vaugh getting one of the Monmouth goals. "We deserved the result," said Lewis.

"We let it slip a bit after the break, but we were in control throughout. The back four were very tight and Mark Turley did an excellent job at centre back. With the full side out this team is very good," he added.

Monmouth firsts are back in action this Saturday at home to Cromwell Youth, kick off 2.15pm.

"With Tillery down the bottom with us winning on Saturday it's a game we need to win to stay on the pace," insisted Lewis.
