Caerau Ely 0 Goytre 2
GOYTRE chairman Paul Greenhalgh has insisted his side will continue taking each game as it comes despite moving up into eighth in the table after Saturday's convincing win over promotion chasers Caerau Ely.
A brace from Mark Langford sealed the Plough Road side's sixth win of the season making it 21 points for the term - just ten from a place in the top three.
But the experienced Greenhalgh, who guided the side in its early days up through the Welsh pyramid system, said the only target in their heads was the next game in hand.
"It was a cracking win for us. It's always nice to score a couple of goals away from home especially against a side second in the table. To be honest we were struggling at the back with defenders Scott Askew (work) and Mike James (injury) out.
The manager Steve Morgan brought in Ian Rosser and Phil Jayne alongside Dean Taylor and Darren Haines and they were brilliant.
"If anything in a side needs to be settled then it's the defence, so to play like those lads did on Saturday with all the disruption was amazing.
"Ian Rosser in particular did very well. He's experienced and knows what it's all about. "It was a difficult game for us, but we were in charge most of the game," said Greenhalgh.
Goytre's midfield was just as big a success story as their makeshift defence. New signing Ryan Young from Tredegar Town looked solid on the left wing, while Justin Evans, Kevin Wallace and Steve Collett were as accomplished as ever as their pace proved too hot to handle for the Caerau Ely line.
Greenhalgh admitted the win was the perfect tonic after the previous weekend's defeat against Tillery.
"We did go into the game cautiously, but in this league the bottom teams can beat the top and visa versa. Once again this game proves just how tight this league is on the field. It was a terrific team performance though and we thoroughly deserved the result," he said.
Goytre's win pushes Caerau Ely into third. Greenhalgh is hoping a victory on Saturday against old friends Albion Rovers doesn't push the Newport side one step closer to relegation.
"Albion Rovers have been one of the top sides in Gwent for years. Either way it's going to be a cracker," he said.
