Super Saturday again for Hamer's battlers

Abergavenny 29 Abercarn 7

ABERGAVENNY team manager Steve Hamer says his side likes nothing more than winning on a Saturday afternoon, as he watched his side move to fifth in the table with a comprehensive victory against Abercarn.

Abergavenny extended their unbeaten league run to seven games with a dominant display against basement outfit Abercarn at Bailey Park.

But, despite Hamer's obvious joy, he was quick to warn: "Dismiss any team in the division at your peril."

He went on: "It was a big win, but it started off like hard work, then in the second half we got a couple of tries and ran in a good win.

"Of course we should be thinking of promotion now. There's been a bit of a break away in the table and we're part of it, but the division is still wide open in my opinion, and everybody's in it.

"Abercarn are right down in the bottom, but they beat Pill before they played us. Pontypool United are also dark horses who can catch you out. With every game you have to throw caution to the wind," he said.

The Division Three East side, now just six points off league leaders Brynithel, bagged five tries against a powerless Abercarn side - full back Rhys Williams, wing Richard McCormack, centre Leighton Thomas, captain Will James and hooker Gareth Williams getting the touchdowns.

James Didcote and Simon Rose added a coversion each.

"The team has peaked at the ideal time and our aim now has to be promotion," insisted Hamer.

"At the beginning of the season we were still one of the strongest sides in the division, but the problem was we were playing to the other teams' standards. We are capable of a higher standard.

"The good thing from our point of view is we have a lot of youngsters we are developing alongside the older heads. It's a good mix," he said.

Abergavenny face Cwmbran this Saturday, kick-off 2.20pm, in a game described by Hamer as "mouthwatering. "We will need to dig in as we have done in our last few games. Everyone needs to give 100 percent," opined Hamer.
