Aber to appeal over red card

ABERGAVENNY are set to appeal against the sending off of captain Will James, who was cited for gouging in Saturday's defeat at Cwmbran.

Team manager Steve Hamer disputed the shock red card, citing James as one of the club's most level-headed players.

"This is the last thing Will would have done," insisted Hamer. "There was a bit of a punch up between Will and another player, but he showed little aggression and despite that, the referee comes in with an immediate red card - no yellows, just the red.

"It was all a bit harsh and we are going to appeal against the decision as soon as possible."

Abergavenny's officials will be hoping the card is revoked, because James is already carrying a number of yellow cards and is likely to be handed a tough suspension if it stands.

"He's a very influential player, and his loss would leave a gap in the side," admitted Hamer.

The Bailey Park side were left completely frustrated after this Division Three East fixture.

The Cwmbran defeat comes as a bit of a shock after a long run of wins for Abergavenny, which has pushed them climb into promotion contention.

Hamer admitted it was the last glitch they could afford if they are to maintain that challenge. "It was a very frustrating game. We gifted them their 17 points with a couple of interceptions, so, all in all, it was just a bad day at the office.

"We did well to get back to 10-10, but the rub of the green was just against us. We still have nine games left, so, there is plenty left to play for. Hopefully some of the other sides will slip up a bit as well, maybe with injuries.

"We can't afford to slip up again, though. I think this is the one and only defeat we can realistically afford now," Hamer concluded.

Abergavenny's only try on Saturday came from fly half James Didcotte.

Nick Gething, playing his first game at openside flanker, shone with a solid display and looks a good player for the future with coach Mark Lloyd keen to bring as many young Abergavenny lads into the fold as possible.

Abergavenny are now lying fifth in the Division Three table.
