Medieval mire

CONCERNS over the silting up of an ancient monument are to be addressed. The survival of the medieval Town Ditch is under threat, because of recent development in the area.

Monmouth Town councillor, Sue Chivers, met a representative from the environmental agency to illustrate the problems that water has of escaping through the drainage system into the Town Ditch.

Cllr Chivers pointed out that since the housing development of the old Victoria Dairy site, the drains to the ditch have become blocked during construction.

She said: "The drains are there to allow water from Wonastow Road to flow freely into the Town Ditch.

"The other concerns I have is the amount of water that still remains in the ditch and hasn't run off and requires sensitive dredging.

"I also understand that numerous inlet drains appear to be blocked and that the accumulation of rubbish has not helped."

The ditch is the responsibility of the Environmental Agency and Monmouthshire County Council, who have assured that all drains will be inspected and cleaned as required.

Cllr Chivers added: "I am pleased that both organisations are working to resolve the problem, and I hope that they can carry out the work without any disturbance to the fabric of this ancient monument."
