Kyle Holmes XV 3 Select Old Boys XV 0
ABERGAVENNY THURSDAYS' Old Boys games always get the memories flooding back, but last weekend's specially arranged encounter proved to be one of the best in recent years.
Around 200 fans flocked to the club's Pen-y-Pound Ground to catch a glimpse of the some of the famous faces of yesteryear, including legendary starlet Tommy Hamilton, whose deadly boot earned Thursdays' unprecedented success back in the 1950s.
The day also acted as a reunion meeting for all of Thursdays' players - young and old - to look back on the club's proud history. A buffet lunch followed the match with a chance to look back over some of the club's old memorabilia, including jerseys and photographs.
"It was a fantastic day," said former Thursdays' player Brian Griffiths.
"A special thank you has to go to the referee, Chris Woodhouse, and Dover and Co, which produced the programmes. Also Phil Hemmings and Gary Thomas, who did a great job getting all the memorabilia together," he added.
Fans and players also got a chance to hear news on the committee's bid to take over the running of the club as a football trust, with a speech from Chris Davies.
"Basically we want to keep the interest in the club high until the council makes its decision on the future of the lease. We're expecting that decision around March," said Griffiths.
On the field Kyle Holmes' XV made easy work of a Select Old Boys side in a very entertaining game. Goal scorers included Simon Tyler and Darren Hamer.
Early in the day Thursdays players of the future got expert coaching from Len Wilcox and Randy Lewis with a special football academy at the ground.
"Overall it was a brilliant day for young and old. Hopefully it marks a sign of things to come," said Griffiths.
