It's party time!

THE new Monnow river crossing is nearing completion and plans for a party are in full swing.

Members of Monmouth's Partnership Forum, comprising of representatives of various clubs and associations, is organising an informal celebratory event which will give local people an opportunity to be among the first to cross the new bridge on March 21.

Final details of the proposed programme will be announced shortly but is subject to change due to the completion of building work.

Proposals include a procession led by a Rolls Royce; music from Monmouth Band; a jazz band; the appearance of the town's mascot Harry the Vole; a picnic and hog roast on Chippenham (subject to weather conditions). It is also hoped that the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia) Corps of Drums will be available.

There will be a Shop Window Quiz, based entirely on bridges - with prizes for the winners - and a banner painting competition for children.

Traffic will be able to use the new bridge for the first time on the Monday and the bridge will be formally opened later in the year by HRH the Princess Royal.
