Rallying takes over the racecourse

THIS weekend sees the first major stage event of the year take place in the Forest of Dean. The Wyedean rally, organised by the Forest of Dean Motor Club, has attracted a full entry once again.

Nik Elsmore and Cliff Simmons wheel out their Mitsubishi Lancer, hoping for outright victory. Nik's father, Graham, won this event three times in the Seventies and Nik himself won in 2001.

Stuart Clarke and Ian Allsop tackle the event in the beautiful Ford Escort Mk 2. A quick driver, Stuart will be looking for honours in the two-wheel drive category.

Sponsored by a variety of companies, including Apex Weighting Ltd, Forge Motorsport, Dash van and car hire, Prospeed Exhausts, Clark Willetts accountants and the The Royal Oak at Whitecroft, Paul Willetts and Colin Webb return to competitive motor sport after a 13-year lay-off. The Wyedean will be Colin's 100th event in his career, so they are hoping for a result, contesting the 1400 championship in their Peugeot 106.

Other local entries include Bob Morgan and Adrian Williams, from Cinderford, in a Mitsubishi Lancer; Paul Standen and Paul Loveridge, in a Subaru Impreza; John Reed and Pauline Nash, in a Ford Escort Cosworth, and; Gary Standen, from Coleford.

Gary is a favourite for victory in the Silkolene 1400 Championship. The event is based at Chepstow Racecourse with a stage run twice at the racecourse at 8am and 12pm.

There are a further seven stages in the Forest of Dean and the event finishes back at the racecourse at 2pm. For further information, see www.wyedeanrally.co.uk
