Wrecking crew Goytre at it again

Pentwyn D'mo 2 Goytre 2 Troedyrhiw 0 Goytre 1

WELSH League new comers Goytre might be eighth in the table, but the Plough Road side's two shock results last week have all but handed this year's Division Three crown to league leaders Bryntirion.

Mathematically the championship is still wide open, but Goytre have wrecked some title hopefuls ambitions so much, that not even the AA could jump start any of their chances again.

Goytre, who only last season were still pushing for a place in the Welsh League, have been a revelation this year, earning a rightful place amongst the division's mid-table sides.

Yet few would have put money on them picking up four points against third place Pentwyn Dynamo and second placed Troedyrhiw.

Still, Goytre have earned themselves something of a reputation for upsetting the odds.

"I think we have the makings of a good Welsh League side," said club chairman and former manager Paul Greenhalgh. "We have picked up some excellent results and they have been fully deserved. If we finish the season in eighth I will be thoroughly happy, but if we can go even further, to say sixth, that will be a tremendous performance from the team."

Goytre's midweek game against Cardiff side Pentwyn went ahead despite the poor weather and a late kick off.

Manager Steve Morgan's men came twice from behind with strikes from Andy Walsh, who was set free on goal by the impressive Simon Bailey, and Steve Collett who side-volleyed home Mike James curling free kick.

Against Troedyrhiw, substitute Justin Evans bagged his first goal for the club in his comeback game after injury to nick a tight match, where chances were as few and far between as the sun.

This weekend Goytre's scheduled game against Llantwit Fadre has been postponed because Llantwit are in cup action.
