PARKING problems in Monmouth must be addressed before the town's economy can grow, say councillors.
Monmouthshire county council is developing a revised Economic Development Strategy, which aims to increase prosperity and the quality of life in the four main towns of the county.
The first draft of the EDS was sent out to 130 interested parties for consultation, including town councils and community groups.
Among the key issues raised by groups in Monmouth was the need to improve parking within the town, particularly as there has been a loss of parking to the new bridge and a redesign of street parking.
However, the council says parking is a continual problem in all of the market towns in Monmouthshire and the EDS cannot provide a specific solution.
This issue of parking will be considered as part of 'smaller area regeneration' and transport plans, say the council.
At a recent Cabinet meeting, Cllr Giles Howard, cabinet member for highways asked how Monmouth could grow when it had limited parking facilities.
Ann Webb, Monmouth town clerk, who was at the meeting said the town would have fewer spaces when the new bridge is completed.
Cllr Pam Birchall said the council had a duty to go out to consultation and added: "It's been a long hard slog."
Rick Longford, economic development manager said they had carried out a lot of consultation on the strategy in 2002.
Council leader Cllr David Waring said: "A hotel is needed in Monmouth and there's a nice piece of land going behind Bishops garage."
Monmouthshire council's Economic Development Strategy proposes Monmouth be given the pre-eminent county town role.
An action programme for the town includes the aim to increase the number of small office suite, exploring how to use the Vauxhall Field as a major location for events all year round, seeking funding to improve the Shire Hall and to develop a programme of festivals and events.
