Caldicot draw eight-goal thriller

CALDICOT Town manager Chris Lilygreen was left to rue what should have been and not might have, after watching his side let slip a two-goal lead against Division Two strugglers Tredegar Town.

In the end, they had to come back twice from behind, in a thrilling 4-4 draw that leaves them sixth in the table, with 31 points from 21 games.

Lilygreen took comfort from the fact that his side did not let their heads drop after they surrendered such a comfortable lead, but was clearly disappointed they had not finished the job.

"I am pleased that we came back twice. We didn't deserve to lose, but we should have picked up all the points after taking a two-goal lead," he said.

Lilygreen is sure to be mindful of the fact that Tredegar - a side who previously only barely managed to scrape a goal together a game - slammed four past his top four hopefuls.

Goals from Lilygreen - in his first season as player-manager - and Tom Elwick put Tredegar in seemingly deep trouble early on. Town's stand-in keeper, defender Neil Windsor, showed his versatility with a string of excellent saves.

Leading with that brace at half-time, Lilygreen must have been contemplating not how his side would win the game, but by how much. Yet an inane ten-minute spell after the break saw Tredegar claw themselves back into the match and take the lead with three stunning goals.

A breathless Caldicot Town managed to equalise late on with the first of two penalties from Paul Light, but again Tredegar took the lead, only for Town to get back in it again, thanks to the spot kick.

A win would have kept the pressure on fifth-place Aberaman, who have three games in hand. Instead Town need to use the rest of the week to tighten up their defence.

Division One

Llanwern picked up a useful point against top-eight side Maesteg Park, with an encouraging 2-2 draw at home.

The win keeps them above bottom place side Pontar-dawe, though their relegation rivals do have a game in hand.

Llanwern have now played 20, won three, drawn four and lost 13, netting 22 goals and conceding 50.
