Town lose on league comeback

CHEPSTOW Town assistant manager Wayne Samuel says he is not worrying about a fight with relegation yet, despite his side languishing fourth from bottom in the Welsh League Division Three table.

Town, making their comeback after a three-week ban from competitive action because of an internal matter with the Welsh League, lost their tenth game of the season against mid-table Cwmamman, who scored three of their goals in an error-stricken thirty-minute spell of football.

After that, Town regained their shape, despite conceding another goal and had chances to claw back a couple of consolation strikes, but failed to do so.

"It wasn't exactly the comeback game we were hoping for," sighed Samuel.

"For thirty minutes, we didn't perform and those thirty minutes cost us the game. After that, we handled ourselves fairly well."

Speaking on that hapless opening spell, Samuel added: "Their penalty goal came from, what was in my opinion, a bad decision by the referee. Their second and third goals were from defensive navet from our part and the third was just a total mix-up by us.

"No excuses - we are not where we should be. We are concerned with that. We feel we should be producing more than we are and I think the confidence has gone a bit, which we have to get things back.

"We're making errors that are putting us under unneeded pressure. We're conceding cheap goals and finding it hard to score and that's the crux of our problems. I think we have to rediscover how to win."

With 15 points from 17 games, Town have a lot to do, with less than half the season left to turn their flagging fortunes around. With three games in hand and a possible nine points up for grabs, Samuel is still optimistic of the future.

"We're not in a situation where we are calculating what we need to stay up. We're looking no further than the next game. Relegation isn't an issue. We need that first win to generate confidence. When we get it, we'll move on from there."
