Gwent Central League round-up

Only four games survived the bad weather but admiration must go to the Cwmffrwdoer club for the effort they made to keep a game of football on, which resulted in a 4-1 win over visitors Lower New Inn in the A Jones & Co Usk Langdon Cup Quarter Final.

Groundsman Steven Wells spent all Friday afternoon on his own removing three inches of snow off a third of the pitch.

On Saturday morning Steve was joined by Colin Poulsom and nine youngsters from the club and a lot of hard work kept the game on, a job very well done.

In the match, Ross Peake put Cwmffrwdoer 1-0 up after 20 minutes with a powerful shot from just inside the box. Lower New Inn bounced back when, after 20 minutes Simon Heatman levelled the scores.

After half an hour's play Lee Howells hit a powerful shot which rebounded off the Lower New Inn upright and Wayne Saunders, following in, headed a perfect goal to put Cwmffrwdoer into a 2-1 lead.

With five minutes to half time Ross Peake sent in a right side cross which was met by Kyle Tovey who scored with a left foot shot into the top of the net. Half time Cwmffrwdoer 3 - Lower New Inn 1.

The second half was nip and tuck until the 82nd minute when Ross Peake powered his way past four Lower New Inn defenders and laid the ball on for Jason McCann to score with a simple three-yard tap in.

Ross Peake was deservedly Man of the Match and Cwmffrwdoer go through to the semi-finals draw.

No games survived in League Division One, but the scheduled Division Two game between Sebastopol B and Govilon was played which resulted in a 3-1 away win for Govilon. Goal scorers for Govilon were Steve Wedlock (2), one from the penalty spot, and one from Nigel Smith.

Goal scorer for Sebastopol B was Robert Surtees.

The sides were level 1-1 at half time. Robert Surtees was named Man of the Match for Sebastopol B, Mike Smith was named Man of the Match for Govilon, who move up from fifth position to third, Sebastopol B hold ninth position.

Two games were played in the Free Press Cup Group A.

Prescoed beat Gilwern B 7-1. Prescoed led 3-1 at half time Marvin Adams hit a hat-trick.

Paul Hannon and Jamie Gorman scored two apiece. Paul Hannon was named Prescoed Man of the Match, Lee Williams, Gilwern B Man of the Match.
