'Flukes' deny Thursdays win

Abergavenny Thursdays 2 PILCS 2

YOU wouldn't blame Thursdays boss Bill Main-waring if he asked his players to tuck a rabbit foot in their boots this Saturday.

Two fluke goals that would look right at home on the set of You've Been Framed cost them another three points on Saturday as the Pen-y-Pound side made it two draws in two weeks.

The postmortem reads quite clearly - four points dropped and not two points gained as lady luck continued with her grudge against the Gwent County Division Three side.

Thursdays have certainly turned the corner in recent months. The side now has the confidence to score goals thanks to the signing of Shane Barry and is more solid at the back as their goals against tally will testify.

But what isn't going their way is luck, as Mainwaring admits.

"It's getting very frustrating, but that's football. You can be playing really well and draw or lose and be playing some terrible football, but win. It's a funny game," admitted the former New Inn chief.

Thursdays don't have time on their hands though to be relying on a long-overdue turn around in their fortunes. Stuck in the relegation zone they have few games left to start turning draws into wins.

"We're playing extremely well and against PILCS we had them penned in for much of the game. We need to start winning though. We've found the consistency, now we need to find the victories," said Mainwaring.

Thursdays' goals came from the boots of prolific striker Shane Barry and tireless midfielder Jeremy Fowler.

They'll have a bigger challenge on their hands this Saturday against high-flying Trethomas, and Mainwaring knows that a result there really could signal the beginning of their climb back up the table.

"If we can use the width of our pitch against them we have a chance. Hopefully we'll give them a game," he said.

New signing Ryan Routley will be available for selection. The ex-Llanwern star can play up front or in the midfield. The match kicks off at Pen-y-Pound at 3pm.

The club would like to wish its player Andrew Ford all the best after he was injured in Saturday's game. It is hoped after having stitches to a deep cut on his nose he'll be back to full fitness soon.
