Paul's dream debut

Goytre 3 Pentwyn Dynamos 2

GOYTRE'S Paul Grills couldn't have dreamt of a better debut for his new club after coming off from the bench to score the winner in a pulsating end-to-end game at Plough Road on Saturday.

Grills grabbed the winning goal with his first shot for the Welsh league club and with less than a minute of play left.

Club chairman and former manager Paul Greenhalgh was the first to praise the Division Three side's new star.

"He did very well to come on so late and leave such a big mark on the game like that," said Greenhalgh, of the former UWIC player

Goytre's other new signing Andrew Hamett showed just as much promise with a confident display in midfield. The former Bristol Rovers trialist has joined the club until the end of the season on loan from Dr Marten's semi-professionals Merthyr Tydfil and is likely to play an integral role in Goytre's remaining few games.

Off the back of a 3-0 defeat the weekend earlier against Cwmaman, Goytre did well to rediscover the form that has propelled them to mid-table in their first season the Welsh League Division Three.

A much more astute attacking performance from Steve Morgan's men bred three fantastic goals - the first from top goal scorer Steve Collett before a pin-point Andy Walsh header made it two and Grills added the late winner.

Greenhalgh said he was very encouraged by the win, but did admit the side had lacked concentration in parts.

"We had slipped of the pace a bit the week before and didn't play to our usual standard. On Saturday though we were up for it and that showed.

"It was a good display, but we are still having lapses of concentration, which is resulting in us leaking goals. We can not give these sides chances because if you do they will sniff you out," he warned.

This weekend Goytre travel to relegation-threatened Chepstow Town looking to pick up another point at least.

"After beating them last time we'd love to do the double," admitted Greenhalgh. "They will want to get their act together against us though and will be scrapping for everything. It's not going to be a very easy game at all and they'll be a bit of spice there with our old striker Craig Jolliffe playing for them.

"I think if we can get a point we will be happy and if we get a win that's a bonus. This is the philosophy we have adopted all season."

The match kicks off at 3pm.
