East Gwent League round-up

Benevolent Cup: Caldicot Castle A progressed to the semi-final, after turning over cup favourites Tintern Abbey 2-1 at the Abbey Stadium.

Wayne Duffield gave Tintern the lead at the interval. Castle awoke after the break and were soon rewarded with a cool penalty strike from Ricky Winsor.

As the game progressed, it turned into a midfield battle, with neither team looking likely to score - until, that is, Anthony Robbins, with a neat bit of individual skill, carved open the Tintern defence and slotted home the winner in the 90th minute.

This was Tintern's first defeat in all competitions.

Sudbrook Cricket Club A eventually overcame Chepstow Athletic, after a gutsy start from the Division Two side.

Sudbrook's Robert Thorn broke the deadlock with the first of an eventual four-goal haul for him. Mark Cochrane and an own goal from Dai Palmer finished the Athletic's dream.

Fishwick Cup

The Fishwick Cup final will be contested by two teams from Chepstow. Thornwell Burnt Barn booked their place in the final by defeating Cricket Club B 6-5.

John Shorrock hit a hat-trick, withKenny Vidler (2) and Darren Gulliver the other Barn scorers - see report below.

Division One

In Division One, Underwood closed the gap on Tintern Abbey, by defeating bottom club Cross Hop 6-0. David Rees (2), Richard Snell (2), Dean Powell and Kurt Thompson were the Underwood scorers.

Portskewett A defeated Tippling Philosopher 6-1, Gareth James bagged four, with David Watkins and Simon Hathaway the other home team scorers, cancelling out Jon Lane's early strike for the Tippling.

Caldicot Town enjoyed a 5-3 home win over Chepstow Town.

Gareth Huntley secured victory for Caldicot with a late brace on 89 and 90 minutes. Richard Withey (2) and Adrian Porter were their earlier scorers.

Monmouth Town A drew an entertaining 5-5 game with Undy Athletic A, Matthew Williams (3), Chris Hughes and Justin Harris the Monmouth goal scorers.

Division Two

In Division Two only one game took place and it turned into a 3-3 draw between Caldicot Castle B and Monmouth Town B. Richard Clayton, Phil Price and a rare Mark Anderson strike secured a point for the Castle outfit.
