East Gwent League round-up

IN the only game to survive the rain, Monmouth Town B put on one of their best performances of the season to thrash Mathern Athletic B 4-0.

The East Gwent League Division Two clash was played in difficult conditions but Monmouth's decision to play with the wind in the first half paid off.

Three goal in four minutes from strikers Matthew King (2) and Craig Lewis gave the home side a 3-0 half-time lead.

Good defending in the second-half kept their opponents goalless and in the last minute of the game Adam Cleaves popped up for a fourth goal.

Manager Terry Cleaves said he was delighted with the performance. "We have struggled for consistency this season due mainly to the fact that we have about seven players aged just 17. But on Saturday they clicked and it was good to see."

The win sees Monmouth leapfrog Mathern towards the bottom of the league. In the only other match to start, Bulwark's match against Caldicot Castle A was abandoned after just 10 minutes because of weather conditions. Castle were 1-0 up at the time but the only real winner was the force 10 wind!
