Visit to Victorian era

PUPILS at a Caldicot school traded their bey blades for spinning tops last week when they turned back time to sample a taste of Victorian life.

As part of their studies, year six pupils at Durand Primary School in Caldicot held a Victorian Day.

Each of the pupils dressed up in Victorian costume and were given a Victorian name. And they even sampled the delights of Victorian cuisine with an authentic lunch of beef stew and steamed puddings.

Class teacher Mark Campbell said: "The children have been studying Victorian life all year and it was due to their enthusiasm for the subject that we decided to put the theory into practice.

"We had a great day, they really enjoyed getting dressed up and living the school day as Victorians would."

As part of the event, soldiers from the Welsh Guards gave the pupils a lesson in drill practice and an embroidery expert instructed them in the popular Victorian pastime.

To ensure an authentic experience the pupils were taught the 'three Rs' Victorian-style. Mr Campbell said: "I think our Victorian-style head teacher was in fact more frightening to the pupils."
