Garnlydan 0 Mardy 7
MARDY are on the brink of re-writing the history books and finishing inside the Gwent County Division One top three, after stretching their winning run to eight games with this thumping of Garnlydan.
Buoyed by the thrashing, manager Gavin Butler reckons his side is good enough to leapfrog third-place Cwmbran Cel-tic, who only six months ago were described as a class above Mardy.
And if they do, then it will signal a new chapter for a club who less than a decade ago was at the bottom of the soccer ladder in Gwent Central League.
"Cwmbran are two points ahead of us and we can catch them," said Butler. "We are now on a par with them. Last year I would have said they were far better than us, but we have come on so far there is nothing between us. We're amongst the big boys now.
"For us the Welsh League is not a dream anymore, it's a reality. I think we will go on from strength to strength now. We have a good squad full of experience and youth and we're at that peak where no one will want to play us."
Ruthless Mardy were unrelenting in their quest for goals against relegation-doomed Garnlydan on Saturday.
Substitute Ross Povey's made it two in two games after coming off the bench, while Robert Frost's bullet of a shot from 25 yards out screamed into the net.
Adam White chipped in with a neatly taken brace, and Tom Overton and Will Hughes completed the rout with a goal apiece.
"The lads are very, confident and we believe we can beat anyone," said Butler. "That's half the key to success, being confident and knowing you can win. We have four games left and we are looking at winning all of them. We are not fazed by anyone."
Eight wins in eight games is no mean feat and could be close to a Gwent County record. Butler was just as enthused in his thoughts.
"Certainly for the club this is an unprecedented run of form. It's a difficult feat to achieve. In this league anyone can beat anyone, so for us to string together this run is amazing, he concluded"
Mardy travel to Cwmbran Celtic this Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
