Whiteheads 10 Abergavenny Thursdays 1
THURSDAYS' manager Bill Mainwaring has admitted defeat in his club's fight to avoid bottom spot in the Gwent County Division Three table after Saturday's pasting at Whiteheads.
Read nothing into the result. Saturday's merciless whipping was all down to an unfortunate injury to 'keeper Jamie McKindo.
When Thursdays' shot-stopper was forced off the field after a solid and goalless 40 minutes of football Thursdays fell into limbo. Frontman Ryan Routley was moved into goals leaving them with not only inadequate cover in front of the net, but also without a dedicated attacking player.
The goals soon showered down with Thursdays' only consolation a Ross Fury effort. "We're destined for bottom now," admitted Mainwaring.
"I think you make your own luck, but we have never had the run of the ball. We have played very well in quite a few games this year, but have had little luck. That's what happens though when things don't go your way."
Thursdays' only saving grace is the fact they are unlikely to be relegated to the Gwent Central League because of the number of sides who have already dropped out of the division due to varying reasons.
A decision is likely to be made in May by the Gwent FA as to whether they will hold on to their Gwent County status.
Mainwaring admitted he has one eye on the close season with big plans to build on his current squad.
"We're looking for commitments from the players we have now because there are some very good ones here. Once everything has then been sorted out with the council and the running of the club we will look to get half a dozen new players in to complement our current stock," said Mainwaring.
