Quality football sees AFC shoot down Bluebirds

Thornwell Burnt Barn AFC 2, Trethomas Bluebirds 1

In a make or break game, Thornwell came good and held out with a quality game of football.

With Trethomas still having games in hand over Thornwell it was a game the home team could ill afford to lose.

The game started with Jason Morris playing as a makeshift centre half alongside Dave Taylor.

He fitted in well in an unfamiliar role and stopped the away side's threats. Thornwell went one up within half an hour when Terry Woodward capitalised on a defensive mistake to volley in from eight yards out.

The game then became a cat and mouse affair with both sides creating chances.

The second half started as the first had ended. Thornwell then broke away down the left first through Simon Lewis, then Steve Griffiths working the keeper before Peter Acreman slotting home to make it 2-0.

Trethomas made sure it was a nervous last 20 minutes when they broke clear, riffling an unstoppable low shot past Mark Davies. Thornwell held on and celebrated with the usual chants of 'He's an animal' to Simon Lewis.
