Health & Beauty: Your guide to great summer hair

Monmouthshire hair salon owner Rebecca Price gives you her top 10 tips to having great hair this summer.

Rebecca, who owns Dr Swede in Chepstow, recommends the following:

Wash your hair as soon as possible after swimming. Use an anti-chlorine shampoo to prevent hair drying out.

Pamper your hair by using hair conditioning treatments once a week for at least one month before going on holiday. I would recommend Aussie three minute miracle re-constructer (£5.69) or TIGI Bed Head chocolate head massive hair repair treatment (£10.50)

If you regularly have your hair permed or chemically straightened, do this no less than four weeks before you go on holiday and with colouring no less than two weeks. This gives your hair time to settle down before exposure to sun and swimming.

Get a hair trim regularly to avoid split ends.

Use a leave-in conditioner when your hair is wet as it is more vulnerable.

Drink plenty of water and try to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables to maintain the balance of vitamins to nourish your hair.

Wear a sun hat or head scarf if you are spending a lot of time in the sun.

If you normally blow dry or use heat on your hair, try and give it a break and let it air dry.

Use hair products without alcohol to avoid drying affect.

Stay away from hair lightening products such as sun in. Most contain some peroxide or metallic salt and cause severe damage to your hair, and undesirable effects such as orange, green or pink hair. Even worse if the product contains metallic salts and you perm your hair, it may literally turn your hair to mush and wash it down the sink.
