Cash boost for new nursery

MONMOUTHSHIRE County Council has been given a grant of £346,000 from the New Opportunities Fund towards the cost of the new nursery at Harold Road Junior School.

This was announced by Colin Barnard, a member of the project team involved in the shake-up of primary education in the county, to members of the council's cabinet.

The cabinet agreed to the publication of notices to amalgamate the Special Educational Needs units at Llwynu Infants and Harold Road Junior Schools and establish a new 26-place nursery at Harold Road School.

The SEN unit will be based at the new primary school, as yet un-named, which is currently being built on the former Llwynu school site.

Cllr Mike Smith, the cabinet member for lifelong learning said both proposals had found support from parents, governors and staff, although there were some issues involving the finer details. He said: "It is very much welcomed by the community in Abergavenny."

Cllr Verona Nelmes said there had been an extremely positive meeting about the proposals and she found local people were settling down well to the proposals.

The new nursery at Harold Road School is especially welcome to parents living at that end of the town, and was one of the things asked for when it was announced the school would be remodelled into an all-through primary school.
