East Gwent League round-up

Division One: Underwood A retained the league Championship after defeating close rivals Tintern Abbey 2-1.

Tintern knew if they were to take Underwood's crown they would have to win the fixture. Underwood knew a draw would be enough. The first half was disappointing with both teams playing below par (probably nerves were playing a big part).

The second half kicked into gear on 63 minutes when Richard Snell opened his account for the afternoon for Underwood.

James McManus added a second with a superb lob after 70 minutes this sent the one hundred and fifty loyal home fans into a frenzy. The second Underwood goal seemed to kick start Tintern into life and along with some inspired substitutions.

Stuart Mackie hit a low drive after 78 minutes to give Tintern hope. The last ten minutes were backs to the wall football for Underwood, Tintern bombarded the goal with crosses and shots but found Pat Ryall in fine form. Underwood eventually held out despite several goal line clearances to retain their crown.

Asda defeated third placed Caldicot Town 3-2 with goals from Andy Vaughan, Rob Mananga and Simon Luff.

Undy Athletic drew 2-2 with Portskewett A mid-week thanks to a Rhys Wheeler brace then on Saturday defeated Tippling 5-3.

Sudbrook C/C A finished their season off with a 9-1 victory over Monmouth Town A, Rob Thorn scored five to take his seasons tally to forty, Rory Aldritt (2), Mark Cochrane and Steve Phillips the other scorers.

Division Two

Mid-week: Mathern Wanderers defeated Sudbrook C/C B 2-0 with goals from Jamie Davies and Steve Taylor.

Portskewett B resurrected Thornwells chances of winning the league when they beat Chepstow Athletic 3-1, Steven Lovell, Danny Mullins and Andrew Jones the Skewett scorers.

Undy Athletic B won 2-1 against Caldicot Castle B, Andy Morrelli and Richard Smith the Undy heroes.

On Saturday Portskewett B beat Bulwark 6-2 with goals from Steven Lovell (2), Brian James (2), Mark Watkins and Andrew Jones.

Finally Mathern Wanderers again proved to be a thorn in Caldicot Castle A's side by drawing 2-2 away Dan Windos and Dave Heritage for Mathern. Anthony Robbins and Paul Shaw replied for the Castle.
