WORK on the conservation of the Old Monnow Bridge could be complete by September following the allocation of vital funding for the scheme.
An application for Article 33 European Funding, which will cover 80 percent of the cost of the work, has been successful.
Members of the Central Monmouthshire Area Committee were also told this week that the council's Cabinet voted to match fund the scheme.
The project will lead to the regeneration and conservation of the ancient landmark bridge, which has been closed to traffic since the opening of the new Monnow Bridge in March.
The scheme will make the old bridge more pedestrian-friendly and is an integral part of a plan to encourage more people to stop and enjoy Monmouth.
An archaeological survey and historical research has already been carried out on the bridge. Jenny Lewis, area manager for central Monmouthshire, said the project will be managed through the Central Monmouthshire team, with detailed advice from the county's conservation officer.
Members of the regeneration team will advise on the co-ordination of the project to ensure it complies with the original application.
Local councillors have raised concerns about the roundabout at Drybridge Street and Cinderhill Street, behind the old bridge.
Cllr David Waring described the stretch of road as a rat run. He said: "The roundabout has to stay where it is because that is the only place where people have to slow down. If you remove it, it will be dangerous."
