Wormelow blown away

IT WAS a whirlwind unbeaten 85 from David Teague that swept Monmouth Cricket Club to a convincing seven-wicket away win over neighbouring Wormelow in the Flint & Cook Marches League Divi-sion 1 on Saturday.

The former Newport all-rounder blazed 14 fours and two sixes in a blistering 45-ball innings as the reigning league champions cruised home in the 33rd over.

The ex-Glamorgan 2nds batsman took centre stage after openers Dan Head (34) and Rob Prewett (21) had given Monmouth a solid foundation on which to build.

Chasing Wormelow's respectable 173-9, Head and Prewett put on 60 in 15 overs until both batsmen departed in quick succession.

Teague and Dave Croudace, another former Newport player, put Monmouth firmly in control with a third wicket stand of 92.

After Croudace was dismissed for 29, Dan Fisher (1 not out) kept man-of-the-match Teague company and Monmouth cruised to the target with 11.5 overs remaining to chalk up their second win of the campaign.

Earlier, stand-in captain Jonathan Roberts was one of Monmouth's leading performers with the ball.

Roberts snapped up 2-37 from 15 overs and was backed up by spinner Aled Jones (3-29 from 8), Teague (2-65 from 14) and Alex Richards (1-37 from eight).

Wicketkeeper Jonathan Davies made a stumping, while catches were taken by Fisher and Teague, and there was a fine piece of fielding from young Dan MacDonald that led to a run out.

The Herefordshire team's leading batsmen in their 173-9 were Shaun Waldron (53) and Tim Boulter (43), while Ian Herbert (19), Chris Powell (14) and Mark Shaw (14) also chipped in for the villagers.

Wormelow looked well set at 153-4 with five overs of their innings remaining, but fine bowling and fielding from the visitors pegged them back.

The match ball was sponsored by Philip Mathew.

This Saturday, Monmouth will be aiming to record their third straight victory when they entertain in-form Burghill & Tillington at the Sports Ground, 2pm start.

Meanwhile, the cricket club's outdoor nets are continuing on Thursdays at Monmouth School Sports Complex from 6.30pm.
