Local hero chosen to open new Tesco

Tesco's very own 'Local Hero' Mandy Bruce will be guest of honour when the new Tesco Express store in Bulwark, Chepstow opens on Monday.

Following the Tesco Express store's 'Search for a Local Hero' competition run in the Chepstow Free Press, Mandy was chosen as the worthy winner by Tesco in recognition of the years of dedication she has shown in running the 1st Bulwark Guide Unit.

As part of Mandy's prize, Tesco are donating £500 to the Guide Unit in Bulwark. For the past 20 years Mandy has run the 1st Bulwark Guide Unit. During that time hundreds of girls from the Bulwark and Chepstow area have had the opportunity to participate in activities they may otherwise have not been able to enjoy.

These include going away on camp and other outdoor activities and even on international trips. Mandy has seen many of the girls through to be selected to represent Wales as Guides in countries such as Sweden, Thailand, and New Zealand.

Some of the Guides come to the Unit from difficult family situations and Mandy and her team offer them the opportunity to have fun and make friends with the other guides.

Mandy has decided to donate the £500 donation from Tesco to the Guide Unit. The donation will be used to purchase updated outdoor equipment, enabling the Guides to keep going away on their much loved camping trips.

Mandy will be attending the store opening and will cut the ribbon to declare the new Tesco Express store officially open at 10.30am on Monday.

As part of the opening ceremony the Tesco Express manager, Collin Harris, will be presenting a cheque for £500 to Mandy on behalf of her chosen charity, the 1st Bulwark Guide Unit.

Store manager Collin Harris said: "As soon as we read the letter nominating Mandy we knew we had found our Local Hero. She is a very special lady and we are delighted to welcome her along to open our new store."
