Oh what a lovely flowery war!

Llanfoist welcomed hundreds of people on Sunday to admire the 12 beautiful gardens which were open to the public.

The garden owners adopted a wartime theme, because of the day, and one family were dressed in an RAF uniform, the WRVS' familiar green and as a Red Cross nurse.

Co-ordinator of the event was Jan Shieval, said: "It was a whole village event, with the Exotic East at Llanfoist Inn extending their opening hours to offer a buffet, free minibus rides between the gardens given by Mario Maretti, and toilets for the disabled provided by Alun Griffiths the civil engineering contractor.

"One of the gardens on the schedule was at the village school, where the sensory garden created last year by Year 3 children has been enhanced. We had visitors from as far afield as Norfolk, Hampshire and Essex, as we are part of the National Gardens Scheme."

At one of the gardens, Jenny and Brian Barnes' home at Mountwood, there was a bed of poppies, and the garden was adorned with wartime flags and bunting found in Jenny's mother's attic. Her mother, Mrs Gwen Read, now lives at Penpergwm House.

Helping were Jan's friends from her days as a London tour guide, Christine Corbin and Christine Hoodith.
