Cheers! Stable staff eye lager prize

STABLE staff have an extra reason to hope that their horse wins the 8.10 race at Chepstow Racecourse on Friday.

For race sponsors Coors Brewers will be giving the winning stable in the Grolsch Premium Lager Maiden Fillies' Stakes almost 13 stone of beer - the weight of a jockey with some Grolsch beer.

Coors Regional Director Diane Rees, pictured with rider Andrew Thornton, said: "We thought it would be mean if we used a light Flat racing jockey, so we asked a National Hunt jockey to do the honours on the racecourse's scales with a heavy load of beer!

"Stable lads and lasses are so often the unsung heroes and heroines of the racing industry, so it's good for their contribution to the success of a winning horse to be recognised."

About 3,000 customers from 200 Coors-supplied pubs and clubs will be coming to the racecourse on Friday evening.

At the corresponding meeting a year ago, their numbers were sufficient to bring a record number of coaches - 190 - into the racecourse's car and coach park.

The first race time at Chepstow Racecourse on Friday 11 June is scheduled for 6.35pm. Admission is £11 for the Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure and £16 for the Premier Enclosure.
