M&S pledge to stick with town store

DESPITE a review of stand alone Simply Food stores, retail giant Marks and Spencer have pledged that they still plan to open in Monmouth at the end of the year.

Last week, Marks and Spencer's new chief executive Stuart Rose ordered a nationwide halt to any more food store s being opened up.

It was one of the many measures the company was taking in response to the hostile take over bid by billionaire Philip Green.

A spokesman for the M&S said: "The building work in Monnow Street will continue as planned and everything is on schedule to open at the end of the year."

Work started in February on the site of Len Hunt's garage to produce the company's first store in Monmouthshire, which will occupy 5,000sq ft of retail space.

The development of the Monmouth store represents part of a £30m investment in Wales by Marks and Spencer to rejuvenate its nine stores.
