Work pledge over Chepstow project

WORK is to be stepped up on the controversial regeneration scheme in Chepstow Town Centre.

Recent inactivity at the main work sites has been caused by difficulties in the supply of materials for the project, a Monmouthshire County Council spokesman said this week.

"This has caused a great deal of frustration for all those involved in the Scheme. Now these problems seem to have been resolved, it is anticipated that progress will be much more evident throughout July," the spokesman added.

Works planned for the forthcoming weeks are:

Masons will commence work in Beaufort Square this week to begin preparing for the erection of the circular walls. Initial work will include forming the foundations for the stone blocks which - it is hoped - will begin to be installed next week.

Work on Bank Street will also recommence this week. The paving blocks will be installed in the highway and it is anticipated that over the next 2-3 weeks, this work will reach Bank Square.

Poetry bands have also been added into the paving at the bottom of High Street. These installations have already attracted considerable interest, with positive comments being made to people working on site and those involved in the planning of the Scheme.

The poetry bands will continue up High Street and are also planned for Beaufort Square. They have been created by way of a Community Outreach Project, which has seen local poet, Anne Cluysenaar working with pupils of the Dell School, the youth and the U3A.
