Monmouth aiming for promotion

MONMOUTH Town's new manager Andrew Smith has given his side just one aim this season - promotion.

The no-nonsense boss has already instilled a new sense of discipline and professionalism to the Gwent County Division Three side that only avoided relegation last season by the skin of its teeth.

Since Smith's appointment though in the close season it seems a new dawn has broken over the club. Players are training and turning up to matches well in time before the kick off and more importantly they are winning matches.

"We're training twice a week and the numbers are good. As a unit we needed to be more professional and the lads have taken that on board.

"We want to win the title this season and push our way through the County League. Our ultimate aim is to be in the Welsh League where this club really belongs," said the ambitious Smith.

Town have made no real signings in the close season yet look a different side to the one that struggled last term. Smith puts that down to a new strength of mind in his squad.

"The ability has always been there the players just needed to be more head strong and professional, which they are. We've got the players to achieve our aims there's no doubt about that," he said.

Town played the second of five away games on the trot last night against New Inn. They travel to Caldicot Castle this Saturday, kick off 3pm, where Smith hopes they can build on their good form.

"I'm quite happy starting the season with five away games because it means we'll end the season with five at home, which could work in our favour. As long as we're in the right frame of mind, which I believe we will be, we can win on Saturday," said Smith.
