Residents flee flats fire

RESIDENTS of a block of flats in Undy were evacuated from their homes following a blaze.

Two adults and three children, aged between nine weeks and seven-years-old managed to escape unhurt from the fire before flames engulfed their ground floor flat in Elm Avenue last Thursday morning.

Three engines from Newport and Caldicot divisions were deployed to the incident where it took just over half an hour for firefighters to control the blaze.

A police spokesman said: "The family were taken to the Royal Gwent hospital where they were checked over as a matter of precaution. They have sinced been given temporary accommodation in the Caldicot area."

The cause of the fire has not been confirmed.
