Monmouth hand out thumpings

Gwent County Division Three New Inn 0 Monmouth Town 7 Caldicot Castle 0 Monmouth Town 4

MONMOUTH Town are riding high at the top of the Division Three table after three wins in three games and manager Andrew Smith wants things to stay that way.

The new Town boss has enjoyed a perfect start to his tenure as the club's first team manager with his side remaining unbeaten in the league.

They are now early favourites to win the title and promotion back up into Division Two of the Gwent County League after conceding just one goal in three games and scoring 16.

"Our target from the start was to get ten points from our opening five games, which are all away. We've already got nine from just three games so I'm extremely happy," said Smith.

Town continued their fairy-tale start to the campaign last week with two excellent wins over New Inn and Caldicot Castle.

Key to their success has been the goal scoring exploits of red-hot striker Andrew Rogers who has netted six goals this season with braces in every single match Town have played.

Smith said it was important to their championship hopes to have a prolific goal scorer like Rogers.

"The main difference this season has been our finishing. We're taking our chances and creating a lead that our midfield and defence can then hold onto," he said.

Town have two tough games against Trethomas and Rogerstone this week. Smith is quietly confident his side can win both matches, but admitted he would be equally as happy with four points from the two games.

"I think our biggest rivals this season are going to be Abergavenny Thursdays, Rogerstone and Trethomas. What we need to do is keep picking up the points and stay at the top of the table. If we can build an early lead over our rivals then we're in a position where the results can keep snow balling our way," said Smith.

Monmouth Town kick off away at Trethomas on Wednesday, 6.30pm, and away at Rogerstone on Saturday, 3pm.
