Thursdays make a point - or two!

Gwent County Division Three Abergavenny Thurdays 2 Caldicot Castle 2 Trethomas 4 Abergavenny Thurdays 4

THURSDAYS player-coach Kyle Holmes says he is happy his side has got into the early habit of not losing games after drawing their opening three matches of the campaign.

But the former Hereford Town player admitted they did need another experienced centre half at the club to help them tighten up in the backline and stop conceding cheap goals.

Holmes is already on the look-out for a seasoned defender to link up with Carl Walbyoff in the heart of the Thursdays defence. Up front the Pen-y-Pound side has looked electric scoring seven goals in just three games.

The problem is they've conceded just as many at the back and on Saturday let a tremendous 4-1 first half lead against Trethomas slip before the half-time whistle had been blown.

Holmes doesn't think it will take that much work to make the side one of the toughest in the league to break.

"The Trethomas and Caldicot results just show we are lacking a bit of experience at the back. This is a young set of players we've got working in the defence - for some of them it's just their first season. A bit of experience there would help them no end and make us tough to break," he said.

Against Caldicot Castle last Tuesday Thursdays led 2-1 deep into injury time thanks to goals from Andy Ford and Ben Bannon only to let their rivals back into the game with a late, late goal.

On Saturday they looked certain of picking up their first win after going 4-1 up in the first half with braces from Richard McCarthy and Paul Radcliffe against a stunned Trethomas side. Once again though they had to settle for a draw after a trio of costly errors made it 4-4 at the final whistle.

"We're unbeaten and that's a good, solid start," said Holmes. "This is a very competitive league, but we've proven we have the fire power up front to do real damage. With some fine tuning at the back we can be a potent force," said Holmes.

Tonight Thursdays play Rogerstone at home, kick off 6.30pm. On saturday they are away to Sebastopol, kick off 3pm. Log onto the club's official website for more news at www.abergavennythursdays.com.
