Thursdays continue unbeaten run

ABERGAVENNY Thursdays continued their impressive start to their Gwent County Division Three campaign with two wins in a week.

They produced a fantastic comeback to beat Rogerstone 3-2 and then followed that up on Saturday with a thumping 5-0 win away to Sebastopol.

With five games gone, the Thursdays remain unbeaten and need just one more point to tie their points total for the whole of last season!

Player-coach Kyle Holmes said: "We're a different side this season and I'm delighted with the boys."

His side was looking down the barrel of their first defeat in midweek when they trailed 2-0 against Rogerstone but the Thursdays showed good spirit by launching a comeback.

They were helped when a Rogerstone defender was sent off and Richard McCarthy showed the first of his brace of goals from the resulting penalty. Shane Barry claimed Thursdays' third goal.

Full of confidence, they set about Sebastopol early in the game and were 4-0 up at half-time which allowed Holmes to make a few changes to protect players carrying slight injuries including sweeper Carl Walbyoff.

First-half goals by Anthony Ellaway, Ryan Rownty, Richard McCarthy and Glen Morgan put the game beyond Sebastopol and the scoring was completed with an own goal in the second half.

"That was probably the best performance from a Thursdays side for at least a couple of seasons. We have a good blend of youth and experience and they have knitted together well."

The player-coach paid special tribute to the efforts of young striker Shane Barry who worked tirelessly, and Dave Lambert in midfield. He was also happy to have Mark Tucker back in the side for the first time this season.

Thursdays are now looking forward to continuing the good form against Ebbw Vale Town at home on Saturday.

Ebbw Vale currently sit third from bottom with just one win but Holmes says he expects a tough game.

"We're playing with confidence at the moment but I don't think you can judge a team by their position in the table so early in the season."
