MONMOUTH Town's fantastic start to the season continued at the weekend with a thrilling victory that keeps them on top of Gwent County League Division Three.
The high-scoring high-fliers have now fired in 26 goals in their opening five games and player-manager Andrew Smith is delighted.
"We can't stop scoring at the moment but we mustn't get complacent. This is a tough division and we need to stay focused," he told the Free Press.
Town's latest win came on Saturday when they beat fancied Rogerstone 5-4 away. The win followed the team's midweek 4-4 draw away at Trethomas and gives Monmouth a total of 13 points out of a maximum 15.
Amazingly, the run of form has come despite the fact that Monmouth Town has been forced to play its opening five games away from home.
They share a ground with Monmouth Cricket Club and have not been able to use the facilities until next Saturday when they entertain strugglers Sebastopol.
Monmouth's scorers against Rogerstone were Ross McEwan (2), Andrew Rogers, Ross Kennedy and player-manager Smith.
Town should have won comfortably but they conceded two goals in the last couple of minutes of the match.
"We lost our concentration and we must make sure that doesn't happen again. It was nearly very costly," added Smith.
Town's 4-4 draw at Trethomas saw a dramatic comeback from the away team. They were 4-1 down with a third of the game to go but Smith's teams refused to give in.
Second half goals by Andrew Rogers and Ross McEwan (2), added to the first-half strike by Rogers ensured Monmouth went home with a point.
Rogers and McEwan have now scored 10 goals and nine goals respectively and they are proving a handful for the Division's defenders.
Next up on Saturday is Sebastopol who lost 5-0 last weekend to Abergavenny Thursdays.
"Our team is full of confidence at the moment and we would expect to win on Saturday but we'll take nothing for granted," added Smith.
