Caldicot Festival proves big success

THIS year's Caldicot Festival once again proved to be a big hit with hundreds of visitors to the event held in the castle grounds.

The rain on Sunday dampened people's spirits with a low turn-out, but the huge crowd on Monday soon made up for the disappointing start to the festivities.

There was an air of excitment on Bank holiday Monday, live bands entertained the crowds from the main stage, and children made the most of the fun activities dotted around the site.

Among the favourite activities were a bouncy castle, the annual tug-o-war with an old fashioned steam roller with children and a farmers' demonstration of an old hay bailing machine.

There was also a variety of popular stalls which included arts and crafts, face painting and a coconut shy.

Bargains were to be had at the well attended car boot sale that was also held on the castle grounds.

Caldicot mayor Cllr Ron Stewart, said: "It was a wonderful day - the atmosphere was electric - it was a great spectacle with a wide randge of stalls from different sections of the community.

"There were lots of happy smiling faces and a lovely setting with the castle in the background. Every now and then you could hear a huge explosion from the re-enactment of a historical battle performed by 17th century Life and Times, that was taking place within the castle walls."

One of the event's organisers, Cllr Paul Tidmarsh, secretary of Caldicot chamber of commerce, said: "The event would not have been possible without the grants and support from Caldicot town council and local businesses.

"All money raised from this event will help finance the free firework display at Caldicot castle on Sunday, November 7."
