CHEPSTOW RFC lost their first Division Four East match of the season when visitors Crumlin emerged 24-8 winners.
The first half-hour was evenly contested with one penalty each but as half-time approached, Crumlin pressure gave them two further penalties for a 9-3 lead at the break.
The second-half saw Crumlin having more of the possession and only some excellent tackles by Dan Thorne, Dave Davies, Shane Reece and Brad Owen prevented a much heavier defeat.
Chepstow played in spasms, a sign that full fitness is not there yet.
Chepstow's number eight Rob Ostler made some great charges and created a couple of chances but he had to leave the field with a rib injury.
Crumlin then stepped up a gear and scored two second half tries, one conversion and a penalty.
Chepstow scored a first-half penalty through young winger William Colthart and a consolation try by forward Will King.
Chepstow will be hoping to display better co-ordination and organisation when they visit Trinant on Saturday.
