Fifty rafts take to the water

A FLOTILLA of almost 50 rafts took part in this year's annual event on the River Wye.

The event on Sunday that starts at Monmouth Rowing Club attracted not only a host of local teams but competitors from all over South Wales as well.

Crowds lined the route and participated in the fun by throwing eggs and flour at the competitors who got their own back by blasting them with water.

Many of competitors stopped of at the Boat Inn at Penallt for a pit stop en route to the finish at Whitebrook a distance of around seven miles.

Entertainment at the end had been enhanced at the finish this year and large crowds wined and dined the early evening away in glorious sunshine.

The event is organised by the Rotary Club of Monmouth and the money raised goes to charity.

The funds made for this year's charity, Wooden Spoon Wales only becomes clear as sponsorships come in but the initial takings on the day were well up on last year.

The organisers are already looking forward to the event's 41st Race on 4 September 2005!
