Sudbrook lose cup final

SUDBROOK fell at the last hurdle on Sunday when they lost to Cardiff in the final of the Lord's Cup on Sunday.

Chasing the daunting total of 241 for victory off just 40 overs, the inexperience Sudbrook side failed to get close and Ross Lewis (30) was the only batsman to make a decent contribution.

The defeat came a day after Sudbrook went down to a disappointing league defeat to Usk. Again set a total for victory, Sudbrook were unable to reach it and were all out for 143, 30 runs short.

Captain Mark O'Leary remained upbeat despite the double defeat.

"We did well to get to the final but in the end I think our inexperience told. We have a very young side and they struggled to cope with Cardiff's impressive line-up.

"We bowled poorly and allowed Cardiff to post a big total and we were always struggling from then on."

The only plus on the bowling side was Rob Voke who returned impressive figures of five wickets for 40 off his overs.

O'Leary said it was a similar story against Usk. "We didn't bowled well again and despite them only reaching 173, our batsmen never really got going."

Sudbrook go into Saturday's final league game of the season against Abergavenny looking to finish the campaign in style.

"Give the number of youngsters we have in the side and the number of injuries we've had, I'm delighted with the season we've had And with the youth, we can hopefully look forward to better things in seasons to come."
