Pointless game for Caldicot RFC

A YOUTHFUL Caldicot RFC came home empty-handed after their opening Division Five East clash with RTB (Ebbw Vale) on Saturday.

Caldicot had a number of young debutants in their side as they went down 9-0, including flanker Carl Lewis, full-back Stephen Monday, prop Kirk Ward and replacement scrum-half Adam Samuel.

But team manager Kevin Shuck said he was satisfied with the overall performance but the players needed to sharpen up their finishing and cut out the simple errors.

"The lads looked a bit rusty and it showed that it was the first game of the season but hopefully we can improve on this.

"The game was pretty nip and tuck throughout and if we had managed to convert a couple of good chances, the result might have been different."

A number of experienced players left the club over the summer and Shuck says this season is all about consolidation for Caldicot.

"We are blooding a number of new players and the hope is that they will get better as the season goes on."

This season's captain is hooker Brian Hussey and he is expected to lead his team out on Saturday when Caldicot play their first home game of the season against Abertillery, kick-off at 2.30pm.
