Police hunt for 'despicable' thief

POLICE have described as despicable the burglary of an elderly woman's home while she was being treated in an ambulance outside.

The theft was only discovered at the weekend, said PC Gary Lawrence, of Abergavenny Police, after the woman's stolen bank card was used to buy goods in Tesco and Morrison's stores in Ebbw Vale.

He said the woman was being treated in an ambulance outside her home in Gilwern on August 31 when the thief walked in through the open front door and took a purse which contained cash and the bank card.

The card was used in the two stores on the night the woman was taken to hospital, he added, and the transactions were discovered by a relative of the woman on Friday night.

He said the police are now making further inquiries into the theft, including checking cameras at both stores.
