East Gwent Football League round-up

Sudbrook Cricket Club produced an amazing comeback in the opening weekend of the East Gwent League Division One.

After falling 2-0 behind to visitors Tintern Abbey, they clawed their way back to seal a 3-2 victory. Tintern went ahead through Gary Birchall early on and their lead was doubled when Gareth Moore scored on 37 minutes.

Tintern started the second period brightly but as it progressed Sudbrook's superior fitness began to tell and John Mullins pulled a goal back after 73 minutes.

Paul Gorton equalised with a looping head with nine minutes left and the comeback was completed three minutes from time when Richard Lund scored the winner.

Elsewhere in Division One, new boys Rockfield Rovers got off to a winning start with a 3-2 win at Undy Athletic. Undy's goals were scored by Phil James and Chris Fortescue.

Portskewett also started well with a 3-2 win at Asda.

In Division Two, last season's champions Thornwell Burnt Barn fielded a weakened side against Underwood B and were well beaten 4-0 with Bowen Jones scoring twice and Justin Bigwood and Stuart Truckle scoring the others.

Portskewett B pulled off the shock of the day by beating Chepstow Athletic 3-1 with Darren Harris (2) and Stephen Lovell socring the goals.

Sam Holdsworth scored four as Monmouth Town A beat Undy Athletic B 7-4. Charlie Bye, Chris Hughes and a penalty by Ricky Prosser completed the Monmouth scoring.

In Division Three, new boys Devuaden Green lost at home to another new team Tippling Wanderers. Chris Hoskins scored for Devauden while Andy Hunt and two own goals secured a 3-1 win for Tippling.

Caldicot Castle B proved too strong for Monmouth Town B winning 3-0 with Alex Lawry, Alex Learney and Dean Bowen on the scoresheet.

Bulwark made a good start with a 3-0 win against Portskewett C. Ali Macdonald, Dan O'Reagan (pen) and Chris Hooper secured the points.

Finally, Thornwell Burnt Barn B, which came up from youth football last season, team were too good for Mathern Wanderers. Daniel Hinds, Scott Cook, Steve Harrison and Liam Kelly were on target for Thornwell in a 4-1 victory.

Young Steve Harrison, nicknamed Cyclops, dedicated his goal to his father who died recently. Man-of-the-match was Daniel Hinds.
