Cwmbran Hockey Club opened the pre-season in fiery form with a visit to Penarth.
The seasiders eliminated Cwmbran from the Welsh Shield last season, and the Crows were looking for revenge, and took it in spades with a 10-0 victory.
Cwmbran dominated possession from the opening and soon overran the Penarth defence.
John Townsend netted a hat-trick on his return to first team action after spending a large part of last year out of the game. Paul Rees (2), Matthew Stollery, Gareth Price, Richard Eaton and Rhys Edwards also got their names on the scoresheet.
Newcomer Alex Canada scored from the penalty spot on his Cwmbran debut.
A comprehensive victory will put the Crows in good spirits, and the effective operation of their short corner unit - five goals from ten penalty corners - will also boost new captain Chris Silvester at the start of his first season in charge.
With second and third team games cancelled, the two teams squared up in a friendly at the stadium. The seconds ran out 4-3 winners, thanks to Geraint York's bouncing close range flick, but not before the newly reformed third team - featuring four of last season's youth players - had given their elders a fright.
Pre-season training is held at Cwmbran Stadium every Wednesday night. Juniors 7-8pm, seniors 7.30-9pm. All welcome.
