Welsh League Division Three: Treowen 2 Goytre 1; Gwent Senior Cup: Caerleon 1 Goytre 4
TWO games in two days and Goytre chairman Paul Greenhalgh doesn't know whether to laugh or cry.
The former Plough Road manager can take plenty of heart from his side's battering of Welsh League giants Caerleon on Sunday in the Gwent Senior Cup, but Saturday's league defeat against Treowen means Goytre have picked up just six points from a possible 18 in their opening six games.
Greenhalgh is remaining up-beat.
"They were two very hard games in such close succession. To get such a big win against Caerleon, who are two divisions above us in the Welsh League, and just a day after playing Treowen is a brilliant result.
"We know we need to start picking points up in the league. Against Treowen we should have done that because in the first half we played them off the park. If we can take our cup form into the league then things should pick up," said Greenhalgh.
Andy Walsh gave Goytre the lead against Treowen after midfielders Paul Bratt, Mike Vaines, Kevin Wallace, Ian Rosser and Steve Collett dominated.
Two cheap goals after the break cost them a point, but that didn't stop Goytre blowing away Caerleon the following day in a memorable cup tie.
Kevin Wallace proved the architect of that famous win. The tireless midfielder set up Mike Dixon and Stuart Price for goals before breaking through a bewildered defence to score Goytre's final goal of the game. Andy Walsh netted the other.
The Division Three side has been drawn away again in round two of the competition - a trip to Division Two Tredegar who are managed by ex-Cardiff City player John Lewis. The tie will be played either next month or in November.
This weekend Goytre play derby rivals Croesyceiliog at home, kick off 3pm.
