GARNDIFFAITH RFC played hosts to Usk on Saturday and they cruised to a 48-7 victory.
Garndiffaith made their intentions right from the start against the larger Usk outfit, and from the kick-off Garn set up two flowing phases of play to see centre Ben Smith go over for the first try of the afternoon converted by C Sulway.
An infringement from the restart saw Sulway kick a fine penalty from the touchline.
From the restart came the try of the game when Garndiffaith strung together three phases of attacking play involving 14 players ending in wing Gareth Jones' flip pass in the tackle to flanker Joe Cooks who went over in the corner. Sulway converted.
More fine interplay by the Garn three-quarters saw centre C Phillips offload to fullback G Roynon to go over for his first of the afternoon. Again Sulway converted.
With relentless possession the Garn pack drove up the field to the Usk line which resulted in a scrum to the home side.
With the front five of Newman, Robinson, Leek, Billings and Jones totally dominating the set piece, scrum half Steven George was able to snipe his way over the try line. Sulway kicked the extras.
With the home side in control, open side flanker C Baldwin won possession on the Usk throw to set up a fine piece of play intertwining forwards and backs resulting in C Sulway going over under the posts. He converted his own try to make the half time score 38-0.
The second half saw the Garn make changes and with Usk playing with the elements they enjoyed a 15 minute period of possession resulting in a try and conversion.
Garn slowly gathered momentum after these changes and their backs finished a well-worked move for Roynon to go over for his second of the afternoon. Wing G Jones completed the try-scoring to make the final score 48-7.
With Ynysddu coming up at the weekend in the cup, another strong performance will be needed.
